Currently, she serves as the Music Director for the Vancouver Youth Wind Symphony and is part of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s Education Department, leading community outreach and engagement initiatives that connect the orchestra with local schools and diverse communities.
Janie’s conducting journey has been unconventional and adventurous since she graduated from the University of Victoria. While she was working with various community-based non-profit organizations, she continued to refine her conducting skills. She served as Assistant Conductor with the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra for two seasons (2022-2024) under the guidance of Conductor Jin Zhang, through the Wallace Leung Memorial Internship. In her pursuit of further developing her conducting expertise, she has participated in workshops with renowned conductors, including the Satio International Conducting Workshop with Wayne Towes (2023), Cascade Conducting with Maestra Sarah Ioannides (2024), Maestro Masterclasses with Maestra Diane Wittry (2025) and UVIC Conducting Symposium with Dr.Steven Capaldo and the Naden Navy Band (2025).
A passionate advocate for quality music education, Janie is committed to providing learning opportunities outside the formal school environment. She firmly believes in the transformative power of music and works tirelessly to make it accessible to individuals of all ages and skill levels. Her mission is to foster a love of music-making through both educational programs and community engagement, ensuring that music remains a vital part of people’s lives. She continues to seek conducting opportunities to develop her skills and grow her confidence on the podium, always striving for ongoing professional growth.
